ASUS X205ta netbook

Long long time ago, I bought an ASUS X205ta netbook to use on the road, but never got really warm with it. Linux support was miserable, and the Windows installation it came with was no fun either. A few weeks ago I came across it again and thought I’d try reviving it once again.

Battery

Turns out the battery was dead dead. But in theory it’s easily replaceable.

  • Part number: C21N1414
  • Price: 25 - 35€ (1, 2, 3)

However, I’m not sure if this is even worth it yet.

Linux

Back in the day, getting linux to run was difficult, because its a 32bit UEFI with a 64bit CPU.

These days, it seems there are a few distros that can still deal with that. On reddit I found a post on MX Linux on the X205ta, so I went for it, and it actually works quite well.

There’s some more documentation out there, e.g. in the debian wiki, or on installing XUbuntu. I didn’t test these out though

Power Input

The X205ta has a kinda weird charging port. Luckily, it seems used enough that there are USB PD adapters for it.
